BIMINI'S and TOPS - A Bimini is a boat top that folds up for storage or when sun or rain protection isn't needed. When folded, the canvas top wraps around the SS frame and a "boot" covers the canvas and holds the frame in the closed position. Most often found on power boat flying bridges, the Bimini can be used as the start of a full enclosure. Besides protection from the elements, the metal frame adds hand holds and gives the bridge a more enclosed and secure feeling. If the Bimini is designed correctly in it's relation to the bridge venturi, the air coming off the venturi can be directed over the top, helping to calm the air turbulence on the bridge at speed. A Bimini also works well protecting the sailboat cockpit. Design issues are more important due to the need to integrate the top into what can be a complex, working cockpit.
FIXED TOPS - The other type of top we make is one with a SS framework that does not fold. It is a permanent standing instillation but can be removed with hand tools. They have proven to be very strong and surprisingly rigid. Munson Boats, the manufacturer of high quality landing craft type aluminum boats uses our tops. They are in service on commercial, government, and military boats in the U.S. and around the world.
